The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) supports the call of Senator Gatchalian to Congress to impose greater accountability and control of electric cooperatives to improve their performance.

Consumers suffer from frequent brownouts, high price of electricity and continued failure to provide electricity to areas still without electricity as a result of ECs poor performance.

Underperforming electric distribution utilities have high system loss with some reported to have system loss of 30% or higher.

Some of the electric coops continued to be on the red due to inability to properly collect payments. There are also reports of improper use of funds and corruption by the EC Directors.

PSME also lauds DOE Secretary Cusi’s move to review the performance of the 17 ECs with chronic failure to address their underperformance.

"It is right and proper for the DOE to review those underperforming electric cooperatives to protect the interest of the consumers." according to PSME National President Dr. Jeffrey F. Singson.

PSME forges a partnership with NASECORE (Kontra Brownout Partylist) to protect the electricity consumers and to reduce the rate of electricity.
