Why Do Controls Lead to Problem?

Hi Colleagues!

Just want to share on some instances, why do controls lead to PROBLEM?

Some building operation and maintenance doesn't know the reality how  the operation malfunction especially for Air Conditioning System, thus, managing controls and settings to save energy are almost unknown and some say never mind, it's none of your business.Although it is simple, but nobody cares.

Here we go, according to IOR ACHPI 31 Bulletin, the main cause are the followings;

1. Unqualified staff adjusting set points, time clocks and etc..

2. Overlapping or duplicated control functions,

3. Lack of sufficient controls knowledge by the technician,

4. Lack of familiarity with system on which the technician was working, and

5. Inadequate energy monitoring.

Based on  technical discussions arise the following possible solutions;

1. Allow engineer's to gain familiar with systems,

2. Monitor energy use to identify the potential for the biggest savings,

3. Apply a proper controls hierarchy,

4. Update controls should be fit for purpose,

5. Provide adequate controls training for engineers,

6. Take control away from store staff to an external expert bureau

As a conclusion of technical discussions, thus, t is always worth taking extra care to understand how a control and the system which it controls interact and will be used as follows;

1. Read up on the system and consult any site manuals,

2. If necessary consider additional controls training available from suppliers,

3. Try wherever possible to eliminate unnecessary access to controls, and

4. Sped time educating the person on site who will be responsible for adjusting the controls.

As we all know, that wasted energy from poor control of the system could be costing the clients from 30-40% of energy from their operation. So, what we can do is to ensure that the controls are set and managed properly. Thus, by gaining sufficient knowledge and take to apply it, surely you will be helping to reduce the energy demand and save the environment and our planet as well. So, be cautious!
